Portrait Miniature of a Nineteenth Century Australian Girl Depicted in Three-Quarter View
Portrait miniatures from Australia are quite rare. This piece is doubly rare in that is has a folk art feel to it, indicating that it was painted by a local artist, perhaps even self trained. Most portrait miniatures originating in Australia were painted by academically trained English painters who travelled to Australia for commissions. The richness of color in this portrait makes it especially attractive (Much more visible in person rather than in photographs).
It is painted in watercolor and is housed in a later rose gold-gilded copper pendant frame with a protective glass lens to the front and moss green velvet to the reverse.
