Portrait Miniature of a Young Girl in Blue Holding a Basket
This piece is rare in that it is painted on a panel of marble. In the 1840s, Thomas Heathfield Carrick (1802-1874) pioneered the method of painting miniatures on marble. In 1845 he received recognition and a medal from Prince Albert. The portrait is unsigned and could be done by him or one of his students. The heavy panel of marble is framed within a gilt brass frame and includes an easel stand to the reverse for displaying.
Condition: At some point this miniature experienced a crack in the marble that has been professionally conserved.
