A gorgeous Georgian Era locket with reverse-painted sepia Weeping Willow trees gives a three-dimensional effect. Complemented by a deliberately broken three-dimensional obelisk, two women are depicted inside reaching out to two angels holding a gold crown. A skull at the base of the obelisk symbolizes memento mori, a common motif of the time meaning “remember you must die”. The land is made from macerated hair, with the details rendered in sepia. There is fabric on the reverse behind glass.
Condition Note: some of the enameling around the piece is worn away, but otherwise in spectacular condition for a piece of this age.
